The steps may be slightly different for various domain registration services, but generally they will follow this sequence:

  1. Steps for Transferring a Domain Registration Make sure your domain is unlocked. For your security, locked domains cannot be transferred.
  2. Update your domain contact info Pay particular attention to your "administrative" and "technical" contact email addresses
  3. Get your authorization code. Your domain registration website should have someplace that let's you view or request this code. Print this code, as you'll need it to give to your new provider.
  4. Contact your new provider. When you're ready, contact your new provider to begin the transfer process. Be sure to have your authorization code handy, as your new provider will need it to verify the move.
  5. Once your transfer is complete, Cancel your old plan. You can check this status with your new provider. The transfer should be complete in five to nine days. When you receive this confirmation, you may cancel your plan. Note that most services do not automatically cancel your service when you transfer your domain.
